Himachal Pradesh is currently grappling with an intense heatwave, with temperatures in several cities exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow alert for June 12 and 13, warning that temperatures are expected to rise by another 2 degrees Celsius.
Neri in Hamirpur has recorded the highest temperature, reaching a scorching 44.8 degrees Celsius. Other cities experiencing severe heatwave include Una and Bilaspur at 42.8 degrees Celsius, Sundernagar and Barthi at 40 degrees Celsius and Hamirpur at 40.8 degrees Celsius.
In response to the heatwave, the Meteorological Department has advised residents in Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Kangra, Mandi, Solan and Sirmaur districts to remain indoors, particularly during the peak heat of the day. The warning comes as temperature in these areas has surged significantly, with Sundernagar and Shimla experiencing increase of 5.5 and 4.9 degrees Celsius above normal, respectively.
The situation has become worse in the absence of pre-monsoon showers, which typically provide some relief. Although a western disturbance is expected to bring light rain on June 14, clear skies are forecast to return from June 15 to 17, suggesting that the extreme heat may persist.
In addition to health risks, the heatwave is causing environmental concerns. The relentless sun is drying up ground moisture, leading to increased forest fires across the state. The health authorities have advised residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours and take other necessary precautions to protect their health and safety. The prolonged heatwave underscores the urgent need for preparedness and adaptive measures to mitigate the impacts of extreme weather conditions.
