Several high-altitude areas of Himachal Pradesh, including Solang Nala in Kullu district and parts of the Lahaul valley, received light snowfall on Monday (January 6, 2024) morning.
Tourists flocked to Solang Nala to enjoy the fresh snowfall, prompting the authorities to permit vehicles to reach the popular destination. Earlier in the day, access was restricted to Nehru Kund, but by afternoon, vehicles were allowed to proceed to Solang Nala.
The Himachal Pradesh weather department has issued a warning for deteriorating weather conditions over the next two days,

Atal Tunnel temporarily closed

As snowfall intensified, the Atal Tunnel was closed to traffic to ensure the safety of travellers. Police officials stated that the closure was a precautionary measure to avoid complications should the snowstorm escalate.
Meanwhile, tourists continue to arrive in large numbers, enjoying the snow-clad landscapes and giving a boost to Manali’s tourism sector.

Police measures amid traffic challenges

The influx of tourists has created significant traffic management challenges for the local police. Officers have been stationed across key points in Solang Nala to regulate the flow of vehicles.
Manali Deputy Superintendent of Police KD Sharma confirmed that police personnel are on high alert. “If the snowfall intensifies, all vehicles will be directed back toward Manali,” he said.
This wave of snowfall has not only brought joy to tourists but also revived the region’s tourism economy, attracting visitors from neighbouring states eager to experience the winter wonderland.
