In a startling incident, former US President Donald Trump faced an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. “I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” Trump shared on his Truth Social site.
Trump described the moment he realised something was amiss: “I heard a whizzing sound, shots and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.” Fortunately, he was not seriously injured.
An official from Trump’s communications department issued a statement confirming the former President is “fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility”.
The shooting occurred approximately seven minutes into the rally in Butler, western Pennsylvania, on Saturday. Thousands of Trump supporters were in attendance when the shooting, which was broadcast live on news channels, took place. As the shots rang out, the 78-year-old Trump was seen ducking, with Secret Service agents quickly surrounding him. Comments from Trump were audible over the stage’s audio feed as the chaos unfolded.
Secret Service agents swiftly swarmed the podium, surrounded the Republican candidate and escorted him off the stage. Trump, in a gesture of defiance, raised a fist to the crowd as he was led away. He was heard saying, “Let me get my shoes,” as he was moved to safety.
The shocking event happened just two days before the start of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Trump is set to be formally nominated as the party’s candidate. “I want to thank the United States Secret Service and all of Law Enforcement for their rapid response to the shooting that just took place in Butler, Pennsylvania,” Trump said in a post. “Most importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of another person who was badly injured.”
Reflecting on the incident, Trump added, “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country. Nothing is known at this time about the shooter, who is now dead. I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening. GOD BLESS AMERICA.”
