Spiti Cup 2025 a catalyst for ice hockey’s rise in Himachal

The ‘Spiti Cup 2025’, held from January 13 to 17 in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh has emerged as a significant milestone in the promotion of ice hockey within the region.
Organised in collaboration with the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul-Spiti (IHALS), the tournament featured four teams — Centre Zone, Pin Zone, Sham Zone and Tod Zone — competing across Men’s, Women’s, and U-18 Boys’ categories.

Tournament highlights
Men’s category: Sham Zone secured the championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Center Zone. The decisive goal came in the 7th minute from Ajay, and stellar goalkeeping by Abhishek Thakur preserved the lead.
Women’s category: Centre Zone emerged as champions, determined by goal difference, after a series of competitive matches. Notably, Tanzin Solden delivered standout performances, including a five-goal haul against Pin Zone. 
U-18 Boys’ category: Tod Zone claimed the title with a thrilling 7-6 victory over Centre Zone. The match featured remarkable performances, with Tanzin Tashi and Phunchok Wangchuk leading Tod Zone’s offense. 

Growing popularity of Ice Hockey in Himachal Pradesh

The success of the Spiti Cup 2025 underscores the increasing popularity of ice hockey in Himachal Pradesh. Traditionally known for sports like cricket and mountaineering, the region’s unique climatic conditions offer a natural advantage for winter sports.
The establishment of tournaments like the Spiti Cup provides a structured platform for local talent to flourish.
Anuradha Rana, MLA of Lahaul and Spiti, emphasised the government’s commitment to developing infrastructure and facilities to promote ice hockey.
She stated, “Over the past five years, we have made significant progress in Ice Hockey, and we will continue to promote winter sports across smaller regions of this valley by developing more rinks and facilities for the youth and the community.”
