SHIMLA:
For the first time in the history of Himachal Pradesh cricket, two women players from the state will feature in the ICC Women’s One Day International (ODI) World Cup final.
Fast bowler Renuka Singh Thakur and batter Harleen Deol, both integral members of Team India, have brought immense pride to the hill state with their stellar performances throughout the tournament.
This marks a historic moment for Himachal, as no player from the state — male or female — had previously participated in an ODI World Cup. Now, two women cricketers are not only representing India but are also making their presence felt on the global stage.
Harleen’s steady run with the bat
Harleen Deol has shown impressive form in this World Cup. In five matches so far, she has scored 169 runs, including a fine 48-run knock against Sri Lanka and 46 runs against Pakistan. Her consistent batting has been one of the key factors in India’s successful campaign leading up to the final, which will be played on November 2.
Pacer Renuka Singh Thakur has bowled with discipline, maintaining a tight economy rate throughout the tournament. While wickets have been hard to come by — she has taken three wickets in five matches — her accuracy and control have proved valuable in building pressure on opponents. Notably, her dismissal of New Zealand’s captain in the league stage played a decisive role in securing India’s victory.
Pride for the hill state
Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) secretary Avnish Parmar expressed immense pride, calling this a “golden moment” for the state’s cricketing history.
“It’s a matter of great honour that two of our players are part of the Indian squad in the ongoing Women’s World Cup. Their performance has been commendable, and we hope they will play in the final and help India lift the trophy,” he said.
As India prepares for the grand finale, all eyes will be on Renuka and Harleen — the trailblazing duo from Himachal — who have already etched their names in the annals of the state’s sporting history.
