Delhi/Shimla : – A delegation of BJP Members of Parliament from Himachal Pradesh, led by Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur, met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to expedite approval for a ₹900 crore Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness Loan. The financial assistance, facilitated by the French Development Agency (AFD), aims to bolster Himachal Pradesh’s disaster management capabilities.
The delegation, including MPs Kangana Ranaut, Indu Goswami, Rajeev Bhardwaj, and Sikandar Kumar, stressed the urgency of the loan. Anurag Thakur stated, “This proposal, discussed since 2020, was finalized in September 2024 during a virtual meeting with key stakeholders. The Finance Minister assured us of prompt action, recognizing Himachal’s vulnerability to recurring natural disasters.”
Thakur highlighted past central assistance to Himachal, noting, “Under PM Modi’s leadership, ₹1,782 crore in disaster aid was granted last year. This included funds for road repairs, additional relief, and housing. Over ₹434 crore was also allocated under MGNREGA. Himachal Pradesh faces annual challenges due to its geography, making this program critical for disaster preparedness.”
He further praised Modi’s dedication, saying, “Prime Minister Modi has always treated Himachal as his second home. During the disasters, he personally monitored relief efforts, ensuring timely aid. The central government deployed 13 NDRF teams, the 1 Para SF, Army Aviation units, and Mi-17 helicopters, saving thousands of lives. This unwavering support reflects his commitment to the state.”
The delegation emphasized the importance of the loan in strengthening disaster management infrastructure, underscoring its potential to significantly benefit the people of Himachal Pradesh.
The BJP MPs reiterated their faith in the central government’s commitment to the state and expressed optimism about the loan’s swift approval, ensuring better preparedness for future calamities.
