Former two-term Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday (December 26, 2025) at the age of 92, several Congress leaders, including Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, confirmed on X.
Leaving behind a towering legacy as an economist, reformist and statesman, the announcement of Manmohan Singh’s demise created a storm on social media, with the Congress leaders prematurely sharing condolence messages on X (formerly Twitter) even before the official confirmation.
Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Warring and senior party leader Salman Khurshid led the charge, expressing their grief in posts that quickly went viral. Warring’s post read, “Deeply saddened by the loss of Dr Manmohan Singh ji, a true statesman and exceptional economist. His contributions to the nation’s progress are unparalleled and will be forever remembered. Heartfelt condolences to the family.”
Congress leaders Khurshid and Mohammad Azharuddin echoed similar sentiments, calling Singh “the architect of modern India” and praising his leadership during challenging times.
The posts triggered confusion among the public and media initially as no formal statement had been issued by Singh’s family or the Congress party at the time.
Manmohan Singh, born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014. A distinguished economist, he is credited with liberalising India’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister in the early 1990s.
His contributions include key legislations like the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and the Right to Information Act.
As tributes pour in from across the globe, Singh’s unparalleled legacy as India’s first Sikh Prime Minister and a leader who balanced economic progress with social welfare will be remembered fondly.
