New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was allegedly attacked on Thursday (August 20, 2025) morning during a public grievance hearing (‘Jan Sunvai’) at her official residence in Civil Lines.
According to the police, a man in his mid-30s approached the Chief Minister during the weekly public interaction, handed over some papers and then suddenly attempted to assault her. The accused was immediately overpowered and taken into custody. He is currently being questioned at the Civil Lines police station.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the attacker slapped the Chief Minister without warning. “This is wrong. Everyone has the right to raise their issues during Jan Sunvai, but attacking the Chief Minister is unacceptable,” said Narinder Singh, a Delhi resident.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) strongly condemned the attack. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said, “Violence of any kind against an elected leader cannot be tolerated. Such incidents must be dealt with strictly.”
This is not the first time a Delhi Chief Minister has faced physical assault. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Rekha Gupta’s predecessor Arvind Kejriwal had also been attacked multiple times during his tenure. He was infamously targeted with an ink attack and was even slapped by a youth while interacting with the public.
The police are investigating the motive behind Thursday’s incident.
