A powerful earthquake jolted Delhi and surrounding areas early Monday (February 17, 2025) morning, sending tremors across North India. While no reports of damage have emerged, residents described the experience as one of the most terrifying of their lives.
Adding to the panic, a loud rumbling noise was heard from beneath the ground during the quake, causing widespread fear.According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake measured 4.0 on the Richter scale and struck at 5.36 am. Its epicenter was located near Dhaula Kuan, close to the Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education, at a depth of just 5 km.
The shallow depth of the quake amplified its impact, making the tremors feel more intense and triggering the eerie underground sound.
Why was the loud noise heard?
Seismologists have explained that the loud noise accompanying the quake was caused by high-frequency seismic waves travelling through the ground. The US Geological Survey (USGS) states that during an earthquake, ground motion generates short-duration seismic waves, which can transfer into the air as sound waves. If the earthquake’s focus is shallow, more energy reaches the surface, intensifying the tremors and making the rumbling sound more audible. In this case, the shallow depth of the quake contributed to the strong tremors and the booming noise that residents reported.
Experts clarified that such sounds were not uncommon in shallow earthquakes but could be alarming due to their sudden and intense nature.
Widespread panic as people rush outdoors
The tremors were strong enough to wake up many residents from deep sleep. Frightened people rushed out of their homes in areas across Delhi-NCR, fearing aftershocks. Some described the quake as a brief but powerful jolt, with furniture shaking and windows rattling.
PM Modi appeals for calm
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the situation on X (formerly Twitter), urging citizens to stay calm and follow safety precautions. “Tremors were felt in Delhi and nearby areas. I appeal to everyone to remain calm and adhere to safety protocols. Stay alert for possible aftershocks. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation,” he tweeted. While no casualties or major damages have been reported so far, disaster response teams remain on high alert, and experts are assessing the possibility of aftershocks.
Authorities have advised people to stay cautious and follow emergency guidelines in case of further seismic activity.
