Two-day festival brings Zanskari traditions, folk culture and tourism into focus; LG Vinai Kumar Saxena attends opening ceremony

The remote and spectacular Zanskar Valley in Ladakh today came alive with the colours, music and traditions of its rich cultural heritage as the 11th edition of the Zanskar Festival 2026 began at Sani, marking the start of a two-day celebration dedicated to the region’s distinctive way of life, cultural traditions and tourism potential.
The festival, being organised by the Administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh through its Department of Tourism and Culture and the District Administration of Zanskar, is being held on September 15 and 16 at Sani Lake. The event is designed as a major cultural and tourism platform showcasing the heritage, crafts and monastic traditions of one of the most distinctive Himalayan regions.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest. Dr Mohammad Jaffer Akhoon, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor of LAHDC Kargil, and Member of Parliament Ladakh Haji Mohammad Haneefa Jan were the guests of honour.
The festival offers visitors an opportunity to experience the cultural identity of Zanskar at close quarters. Traditional music and folk performances, local customs, traditional attire, handicrafts and other manifestations of Zanskari life form an important part of the celebrations. The event also seeks to provide a platform for local artists and communities to present their cultural heritage before visitors from different parts of the country and abroad.
Zanskar, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain landscapes of Ladakh, has long remained relatively isolated from the mainstream tourism circuit. Its high-altitude terrain, ancient monasteries, distinctive Buddhist traditions and unique community life have made the valley an increasingly important destination for travellers seeking experiences beyond conventional tourism.
The festival consequently carries significance beyond entertainment. It seeks to underline the importance of preserving Zanskar’s traditional identity while opening the region to responsible and sustainable tourism. For local communities, the celebration also provides an opportunity to showcase indigenous skills, handicrafts, cuisine and cultural practices while benefiting from the growing interest in the valley.
The choice of Sani as the venue adds further cultural significance to the celebrations. Located close to the historic Sani Monastery and surrounded by the distinctive landscape of central Zanskar, the area represents the close connection between the valley’s natural environment, spiritual traditions and community life.
The 2026 edition also comes at an important stage in Zanskar’s administrative and developmental journey. With the region receiving greater administrative focus and connectivity, the festival provides an opportunity to project Zanskar not merely as an adventure destination but as a place where a distinctive Himalayan culture continues to thrive.
The administration has also been focusing on ensuring arrangements for visitors and participants, including essential public facilities and coordination among different departments.
