In a significant organisational move, the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) has appointed young leader Yadopati Thakur from the Sarkaghat Assembly constituency as its State General Secretary, signalling a renewed push to strengthen the party with dynamic leadership.
Thakur, known for his grassroots connect and organisational commitment, has had a long and active association with the Congress ecosystem. He began his political journey through student politics and steadily rose through the ranks, establishing himself as a capable and result-oriented leader.
He has served two terms as the elected State President of the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in Himachal Pradesh. He later held key positions in the Indian Youth Congress, including State Working President, where he played an instrumental role in organisational expansion and cadre mobilisation.
Over the years, Thakur has also been entrusted with responsibilities in multiple states, including Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat, particularly during crucial Assembly and Parliamentary election campaigns. His involvement in election preparedness and strategy has been seen as a key strength within the party framework.
Notably, Yadopati Thakur has been associated with the Virbhadra Singh family for a long time and is considered a close associate of Vikramaditya Singh, reflecting his strong political connections within the party’s traditional leadership in the state.
Party insiders note that despite being among the younger faces in the newly announced team, Thakur brings considerable organisational experience and leadership maturity. His appointment is being viewed as an effort by the Congress to energise its base and enhance outreach among the youth.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Thakur was also recognised for his efforts in assisting people in the Sarkaghat constituency, further strengthening his public image as a responsive and active leader.
Political observers believe that his elevation could help the Congress reinforce its grassroots network in Himachal Pradesh while simultaneously boosting youth engagement in the party.
Party workers and supporters have welcomed the appointment, expressing confidence that Thakur will effectively discharge his new responsibilities and contribute to strengthening the organisation in the state.
