An orange alert has been issued in Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy snowfall and rain, as the Meteorological Department predicted that the weather would deteriorate from the evening of February 19.
According to the forecast, heavy rain is expected between midnight and 2 am on February 21, with snowfall likely in the high-altitude areas. However, given the department’s previous unsuccessful predictions, residents and tourists are left wondering whether this forecast will hold true.
Forecasts have often been wrong this winter
The Meteorological Department has warned of potential heavy snowfall in high-altitude regions of Kangra, Chamba, Kullu and Mandi, with a yellow alert issued for the districts of Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur and Kinnaur.
The department has further stated that the western disturbance, which has been the cause of weather fluctuations in the region, will become more active tonight, with the effects lasting until February 21.
While the snowstorm is expected to bring much-needed precipitation to the state, the weather seems calm in Shimla and nearby tourist spots this morning.
This forecast raises hope for breaking the long dry spell the state has been experiencing. However, the department’s track record this winter season has not been encouraging.

From January 1 to February 18, the state has received only 29.7 mm of rain, a stark contrast to the expected 145.3 mm. This represents an 80% deficit in rainfall compared to the usual levels for this time of year.
As a result, drought conditions have developed, leading to water scarcity concerns in several districts, including Bilaspur, Chamba, Kangra and Kullu.
Concerns over travel, local events amid weather warnings
The arrival of heavy rain and snowfall could also disrupt travel and events scheduled in the coming days. As it coincides with the ongoing wedding season and the upcoming Mahaparva of Shivratri, there are concerns about potential disruptions to ceremonies and other social gatherings.
Organisers have been advised to stay updated on the latest weather conditions and adjust their plans accordingly.
The Meteorological Department has also issued an advisory to both locals and tourists, urging them to avoid high-altitude areas during the expected weather changes.
