Shimla:
Amid ongoing devastation caused by relentless rains in Himachal Pradesh, a glimmer of hope has emerged. The Shimla centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its daily weather bulletin issued on Wednesday (September 3, 2025) morning, has forecast a “green category” alert from Thursday till September 9, signalling a likely reduction in rainfall intensity across the state.
Currently, an orange alert with “blue” intensity marking remains in place for Wednesday, indicating the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm, covering over 75 per cent of the state. However, the shift to green from tomorrow suggests only light to moderate rain in isolated places, a much-needed relief for the disaster-weary state.
Monsoon wreaks havoc: 341 lives lost, losses worth crores
The ongoing monsoon fury has so far claimed 341 lives since June 20, with 159 fatalities caused by road accidents alone. A further 389 people have been injured and 41 remain missing. The state has incurred an estimated loss of over Rs 3,500 crore in property damage.
Natural disasters, including cloudbursts, landslides and flashfloods, have destroyed or damaged 4,983 homes and shops, 4,008 cowsheds, and caused the death of 1,912 livestock animals. Districts like Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan and Kangra continue to report extensive damage and blocked routes.
Schools closed as rain continues
With continued rainfall and landslide risk, educational institutions remain shut in several parts of the state. Schools are closed today in Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Kangra, Bilaspur and Kullu districts. In Mandi, closures are in effect across Kotli, Padhar, Sarkaghat, Balh, Karsog, Balichowki, Dharampur, Sundernagar, Thunag and Gohar sub-divisions. Similarly, schools remain closed in Bangana sub-division of Una district.
