Relentless rainfall across Chamba district has triggered widespread landslides, disrupted daily life, and brought traffic to a standstill on several key roads. Among the worst-hit areas is Sheetla, where the rising waters of the Ravi River have severely damaged the region’s iconic old suspension bridge—once considered the lifeline of the community.

The Sheetla Bridge, a vintage iron-rope suspension structure, continues to serve hundreds of residents daily, despite the construction of a newer flyover nearby. For those traveling to Mangla, Sheetla, and Mai Ka Bagh, the old bridge remains a trusted route, deeply woven into their routines and livelihoods.

Local shopkeepers say the bridge supports modest commerce, allowing foot traffic that sustains their income. But with one of its protective walls already collapsed and its iron cables fraying under pressure, fears are mounting that the bridge may soon give way entirely—posing risks not only to public safety but also to education and trade in the region.

Residents have voiced deep emotional and cultural attachment to the bridge, describing it as more than just infrastructure. “It’s part of our memories, our daily rhythm,” said one local. Some even believe the old bridge indirectly shields the new flyover from the river’s aggressive currents.

With the threat of collapse looming, locals are urging authorities to take immediate action to preserve and reinforce the bridge. “If timely repairs aren’t made, we could be facing a major disaster,” warned one resident.
