The 2026 Zila Parishad election results have added a new chapter to Kangra’s political landscape. Contesting as an independent candidate from the Kalund ward, Sureshta Navi Thakur registered a historic win by defeating the BJP’s official nominee with a massive margin of 5,306 votes. This emphatic victory has not only stirred local politics but also sent strong signals at the state level.

Political observers had anticipated a tough triangular contest with BJP, Congress, and an independent in the fray. However, the counting results shattered all predictions, as voters overwhelmingly backed Sureshta Navi Thakur, prioritizing her development work, accessibility, and personal image.

This triumph is particularly significant because in the previous Zila Parishad election, she had won from the Padiarkhar ward by a margin of 1,533 votes. This time, she expanded her victory margin to 5,306 votes, setting a new record with back‑to‑back wins.

Sureshta Navi Thakur had long been associated with the BJP and played an active role in the organization. After being denied a party ticket, she chose to contest independently. The BJP subsequently expelled her at the local level citing indiscipline. Despite this, she campaigned vigorously, and the electorate rewarded her with a resounding mandate.

Analysts believe this outcome raises questions about BJP’s ticket distribution and organizational strategy, while Congress failed to mount an effective challenge. The results reaffirm that in local body elections, a candidate’s working style, grassroots connect, and public acceptance matter more than party symbols.

Following her victory, Sureshta Navi Thakur’s political stature has grown beyond Kalund ward, strengthening her influence across the district. How the BJP responds to this popular leader in the coming days will be closely watched.

Reacting to her win, she stated that although two expulsion letters were issued locally, no action has yet been taken against her at the state level. She credited her success to the trust and support of the people and her commitment to development.

The Kalund ward result once again proves that the public ultimately stands with leaders who live among them, work for them, and honor their trust.
