Special train starts on Kalka-Shimla route amid Christmas, New Year tourist rush; know the fare

With the arrival of Christmas and New Year, Himachal Pradesh is once again witnessing an influx of tourists eager to enjoy the snow-covered mountains. The Kalka-Shimla train remains a top choice for visitors who wish to savour the scenic beauty of the hills.
To accommodate the growing number of travellers, the Indian Railways has introduced a special holiday train on this historic route.
Beginning Friday (December 20, 2024), train number 52443 will depart from Kalka at 8.05 am and reach Shimla at 1.35 pm, with stops at key stations like Dharampur, Barog, Solan, Kandaghat and Summer Hill.

Ticket prices range from Rs 75 to Rs 945

The return journey will commence at 4.50 pm from Shimla and conclude at Kalka by 9.45 pm. Ticket prices are affordable, ranging from Rs 75 for general class to Rs 945 for tourist class and Rs 790 for first class. This service will run daily until February 28, providing a seamless travel experience for both tourists and locals.
The Kalka-Shimla railway line, a marvel of engineering, celebrates 121 years of service this year. Stretching 96 km, this UNESCO World Heritage site boasts 103 tunnels, 869 bridges, and 18 picturesque stations, making it a journey like no other.

Iconic toy train a favourite among travellers

Over the years, various trains, including the iconic toy train and Vistadome coaches, have made this route a favourite among travellers.
A senior official at the Shimla railway station, noted that the holiday special train is designed to meet the rising demand during the festive season. “This initiative aims to provide additional convenience to passengers while offering a faster and more comfortable journey,” he said.
