Shimla: A violent clash erupted between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Students Federation of India (SFI) at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) on Tuesday (March 11, 2025), leading to serious injuries to several students.

According to police reports, three students sustained severe injuries during the altercation, while both student organizations claim that at least seven of their members were hurt.

Tensions over wall writing escalate

The conflict reportedly stemmed from tensions over wall writing, which had been brewing between the two groups for the past several days.

The situation escalated on Tuesday morning near the faculty houses where members of both student organisations engaged in a heated physical confrontation.

Following the initial scuffle, the police intervened and attempted to mediate between the two factions. However, another violent clash broke out later, prompting law enforcement to intensify their presence on campus.

In light of the volatile atmosphere, police personnel have been deployed in the university premises to maintain order and prevent further violence.

ABVP, SFI accuse each other of instigating violence

Both ABVP and SFI have accused each other of instigating the violence. ABVP’s HPU unit secretary, Ashish Sharma, alleged that SFI members had been harassing and threatening ABVP student activists, including female members, for the past 15 days.

Ashish alleged that at around 10 am on Tuesday, SFI activists attacked ABVP members with sickles and iron rods as they were entering the university. He alleged that another attack occurred at around 12 noon in Boileauganj where two ABVP members were assaulted with sharp weapons.

On the other hand, the SFI has accused ABVP of resorting to campus hooliganism and attacking its members. SFI leaders alleged that several of their activists were injured in the violence initiated by ABVP members.

Police officials launch investigation

Police officials have launched an investigation into the incident and the authorities have assured strict action against those responsible for the violence.
The university administration has also urged students to maintain peace and resolve conflicts through dialogue rather than violence.
