Shimla — In response to the India Meteorological Department’s red alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed Deputy Commissioners of Kangra, Solan, Sirmaur, and Mandi to immediately close all schools as a precautionary measure.

The IMD has warned of intense downpours across 10 districts, with heightened risks of landslides, flash floods, and disruption to essential services. The Shimla-Kalka rail line has already been suspended due to debris and fallen trees on the tracks, while several roads remain blocked, particularly in Solan and Mandi.
Authorities are urging residents to remain indoors, avoid travel unless necessary, and follow all safety advisories. Emergency services are on high alert, and restoration work is underway in affected areas.
This move comes amid growing concerns over infrastructure vulnerability during monsoon surges, with memories still fresh from the devastating rains of 2023 that claimed over 550 lives across the state.
