A night of horror unfolded in the serene Jhniyar village of Himachal Pradesh’s Tirthan Valley when a massive fire broke out late Sunday, turning the quiet mountain hamlet into a scene of devastation. The blaze, which started around midnight, spread rapidly through the tightly packed wooden houses, leaving residents with barely any time to react.

According to SDM Banjar, Pankaj Kumar, a total of 16 houses, four cowsheds, and two temples were completely gutted in the incident. The fire also claimed the life of a domestic animal, while 20 families have been rendered homeless, losing all their possessions within minutes.

“It was a terrifying sight — flames rising high into the night sky, and the sound of people crying for help,” said a villager, recalling the chaos that erupted when the fire began.

Firefighting Efforts

Fire tenders from Banjar and nearby stations were rushed to the spot soon after receiving the alert. However, due to the narrow village lanes and wooden architecture, the flames spread uncontrollably. Villagers joined hands with fire brigade personnel, using water pipes, buckets, and even soil to contain the fire. Despite hours of struggle, most houses were reduced to ashes by the time the flames were brought under control in the early hours of Monday.

Relief and Rehabilitation

Local authorities, led by SDM Pankaj Kumar, immediately launched relief operations. Temporary shelters have been set up for displaced families, and arrangements for food, blankets, and warm clothing are being made in coordination with local NGOs and panchayat members.
The revenue department has begun assessing the losses, which are expected to run into several lakhs of rupees. The administration has assured all possible help, including emergency financial aid and rehabilitation assistance.

Emotional and Cultural Loss

The destruction of two ancient temples has deeply shaken the community. Villagers said the temples were not only places of worship but also centers of local tradition and faith, hosting annual fairs and rituals that united the entire valley. Their loss, villagers said, is “not just material but emotional and spiritual.”

Local Response

The Gram Panchayat Nohanda and several youth volunteers have launched donation drives to collect essential supplies for the affected families. Nearby villagers have also come forward to provide food and temporary shelter. Social organizations from Banjar and Jibhi are expected to reach the spot with additional aid.

Probe Ordered

While the exact cause of the fire is yet to be established, initial reports suggest that it may have been triggered by a short circuit or kitchen fire that spread due to the dry wooden structures. Authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident.

A Community in Grief

As the smoke cleared, the once-vibrant Jhniyar village now stands in ruins — charred logs, collapsed roofs, and blackened walls tell the story of a disaster that struck without warning. Families, huddled in temporary tents, are left staring at the ashes of what were once their homes.
Local officials say efforts are being made to ensure every affected family receives immediate support and long-term assistance to rebuild their lives.

“This tragedy has shaken the entire valley,” SDM Pankaj Kumar said. “The administration stands firmly with the affected families, and every possible help will be extended.”
