Since the last week of June 2025, Himachal Pradesh has been reeling under the impact of relentless rainfall and natural disasters. The state has suffered massive losses — from tragic loss of lives to widespread damage to infrastructure and property.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 9 conducted an aerial survey of the worst-affected areas in the state. Following the survey, a high-level review meeting was held at Gaggal airport in Kangra, which was attended by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, Leader of Opposition Jai Ram Thakur, BJP state president Rajeev Bindal, MPs, Chief Secretary Prabodh Saxena and top officials, among others.

During his visit, the Prime Minister also met 19 persons representing the worst disaster-hit regions across Himachal. These people shared their heartbreaking stories and struggles. The emotional exchange revealed a rare and deeply human side of Narendra Modi, who was visibly moved. In a poignant moment, he was seen holding an orphaned girl, Nitika, in his lap, a gesture that touched many and symbolised his empathy and solidarity.

When the Prime Minister landed at the Gaggal airport after the aerial inspection, the pain and devastation witnessed from the skies was clearly reflected on his face. In a heartfelt gesture, he refused to accept any ceremonial gifts, flowers or caps from the Governor, Chief Minister and other officials who had gathered to welcome him, an indication of the somberness of the occasion.

During the review meeting, the Chief Minister and the Chief Secretary presented a detailed report on the extent of the disaster. Responding to it, Prime Minister Modi reaffirmed the unity between the state and central governments, stating: “We are one government. In this hour of crisis, we must work hand in hand to bring Himachal back on its feet.”

He further emphasised his personal bond with the state by saying: “Himachal is my home. I have worked here, eaten here and drank its water. I owe a debt to this land.”

As part of immediate relief efforts, the Prime Minister announced Rs 1,500 crore in direct financial aid to the state government to begin urgent rehabilitation and reconstruction work, Rs 2 lakh compensation for each life lost and Rs 50,000 for those injured. He also assured that inter-departmental teams from the Centre have already assessed the damage and more teams will be deployed to support the recovery process.

This marks the first time in the state’s history that a Prime Minister has extended such significant and immediate assistance, demonstrating not just leadership, but a deep emotional connection to the people of Himachal.

The Himachal Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party expressed heartfelt gratitude on behalf of the people, thanking Prime Minister Modi for not only understanding the pain of Himachal, but for standing with the state like a true guardian in its darkest hour.
