Shimla:
With no financial package announced so far from the Centre, the Himachal Pradesh government is preparing to roll out its own relief plan for the cloudburst-affected areas of Seraj in Mandi district, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said on Friday.
Speaking after offering prayers at Shimla’s iconic Jakhu Hanuman temple, CM Sukhu emphasised that the state government is working on war footing to ensure relief, rehabilitation and restoration in the disaster-hit belt. “We are not waiting for the Centre. Relief cannot wait. The people of Seraj, Karsog, Dharampur, Nachan and other affected regions deserve urgent assistance,” Sukhu said.
State steps in for roads, shelter and compensation
The Chief Minister said the government’s top priority is to reopen roads, especially in apple- and vegetable-producing belts, so that farmers can transport their produce to markets without losses. The state will also provide compensation for damaged homes, cattle sheds, livestock, and personal belongings.
“In areas where homes have been destroyed, families are being housed in rest houses converted into relief camps. Those choosing rental accommodation will receive ₹5,000 per month as housing assistance,” he added.
CM Sukhu revealed that during his recent visit to New Delhi, he briefed Union Ministers in detail about the extent of devastation in Himachal’s rain-hit zones. “I hope that when the Union Home Minister visits the state, some meaningful relief will be announced,” he said.
However, he also pointed out a key challenge: allocating forest land for the displaced will require Central approval under the Forest Conservation Act, while non-forest land will be provided by the state government.
‘Himachal still safe for tourists, says CM amid social media rumours
Countering negative portrayals of the state on social media, Sukhu assured travellers that Himachal remains open and safe for tourism. “Only specific areas have been affected by the rains. The majority of Himachal is stable and welcoming. We are home to 70 lakh people — and life here continues,” he said.
As the state awaits a possible Central relief announcement, the CM’s proactive steps indicate that Himachal will not let red tape delay recovery, especially in the severely impacted hills of Mandi district.
