DHARAMSHALA: While parts of Himachal Pradesh finally saw the long dry spell break on New Year, the much-anticipated snowfall remained elusive for major tourist hubs Shimla and Manali, leaving visitors disappointed. In contrast, Dalhousie welcomed 2026 with a light blanket of snow, briefly turning the hill town white and lifting spirits in the Chamba region.
Scattered rain and snow were reported from select pockets of the state on Thursday night. Una and Bilaspur districts received rainfall in several areas, while higher reaches of Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur witnessed light snowfall. However, Shimla and Manali, which drew large crowds hoping for a white New Year, saw no snow, extending the wait for tourists and locals alike.
Light snowfall in higher reaches, rain in plains
Snowfall was recorded around the Atal Tunnel, Koksar and nearby areas of Lahaul-Spiti on Wednesday, with fresh snow continuing at some places on Thursday. Dalhousie and Churah in Chamba district saw the season’s first light snowfall along with rain, offering a brief winter spectacle.

Cloudy conditions prevailed across several districts including Mandi, Shimla, Hamirpur, Kangra, Chamba, Kullu and parts of Kinnaur. Una and Bilaspur received rain, while Dharamshala experienced light drizzle from the afternoon onwards. Despite these scattered spells, popular destinations Shimla and Manali remained dry, dampening New Year celebrations for tourists hoping to see snowfall.
Clear weather ahead, cold to intensify
The Meteorological Centre in Shimla has forecast generally clear weather across the state from January 2 for the next seven days. It said that light rain or snowfall could occur at isolated places on January 1, but no major western disturbance is expected thereafter.
The department also warned of a further drop in minimum temperatures, predicting a fall of 2-4 degrees Celsius in mid and higher hill regions and 2-3 degrees in lower and plain areas over the next 24 hours. A yellow alert has been issued for dense fog, mist and cold wave conditions in several parts of the state over the coming week.
Advisory issued for travellers in Lahaul-Spiti
Meanwhile, Lahaul-Spiti police said light snowfall was continuing near Gondhla and around the Sissu police station area. An advisory has been issued urging tourists and commuters to exercise caution while travelling through high-altitude routes.
The police have appealed to travellers to check the latest weather and road conditions before proceeding and to avoid unnecessary travel during snowfall, particularly near the Atal Tunnel and adjoining stretches.
