The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) confirmed on Wednesday, based on data from the Karnataka government, that all castes and communities of Muslims in Karnataka are included in the list of other backward classes for reservation in employment and educational institutions.
The Karnataka revelation by the National Commission for Backward Classes has come after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s wealth redistribution plan allegation against the Congress if it came to power. According to the data, Karnataka’s Muslim population is 12.92 per cent.
Muslims in different categories
The NCBC stated that all Muslims in Karnataka are considered OBC under category II-B. In category-1, 17 Muslim communities are considered OBC, while 19 Muslim communities are considered OBCs in category-2A. The 17 Muslim communities considered OBCs in category-1 are Nadaf, Pinjar, Darvesh, Chapparband, Kasab, Phulmali (Muslim), Nalaband, Kasai, Athari, Shikkaligara, Sikkaligar, Salaband, Ladaf, Thikanagar, Bajigara, Johari and Pinjari.
The National Commission for Backward Classes noted that backward and Dalit communities have begun protesting against social discrimination faced by lower caste Muslims from their upper class counterparts such as Syeds, Sheikhs and Pathans.
This discrimination has led weaker and downtrodden Muslim communities like Kunjre (Raayan), Julahas (Ansari), Dhuniya (Mansuri), Kasaayi (Qureshi), Fakir (Alvi), Hajjam (Salmani) and Mehtar (Halalkhor) to identify as part of the Pasmanda community. The National Commission for Backward Classes emphasised that Muslims in India are affected by social divisions within their community.
PM alleges wealth redistribution
Prime Minister Modi attacked the Congress and INDIA block in recent rallies for allegedly trying to appease the Muslims at the cost of majority Hindus. PM Modi alleged that the Congress had made a wealth redistribution plan to give the assets of the wealthy to “infiltrators and those having several children”, an indirect reference to the Muslim community and the Rohingya.
