The revered Manimahesh Yatra in Himachal Pradesh faced unprecedented disruption this year due to severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall and landslides. The pilgrimage, originally scheduled to continue until August 31, was halted prematurely, leaving thousands of devotees stranded across the region.

According to official estimates, nearly 15,000 pilgrims were trapped between Dal Lake and Chamba. With road access blocked, rescue teams relied on foot trails and helicopter services to evacuate the stranded.

The Indian Air Force deployed Chinook and MI-17 helicopters for the operation. On a single day, the Chinook airlifted 524 pilgrims along with three deceased, while the MI-17 evacuated 64 individuals and two bodies. Many pilgrims stranded in Bharmour were flown to Chamba, from where the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) arranged free bus services—nearly 195 buses—to transport them to destinations like Pathankot and Kangra. So far, 8,379 pilgrims have been safely relocated.

The rescue effort saw coordinated action from the district administration, police, NDRF, and several volunteer organizations. Relief camps and medical aid stations were set up along the route to support evacuees.

Tragically, 17 deaths have been confirmed during the operation, with most bodies handed over to their families. Despite circulating rumors of dire conditions, several pilgrims and medical personnel refuted such claims. “We descended from Dal Lake just yesterday. The NDRF team ensured our safety. The rumors were baseless,” said one pilgrim.

Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal stated, “The helicopter rescue operation has officially concluded. However, if any pilgrim remains missing, families may contact the helpline at 98166-98166. Search efforts will resume if necessary.”
