The sacred Manimahesh Yatra, renowned for its spiritual significance and Radhashtami holy dip, turned into a harrowing ordeal in 2025 as torrential rains and flash floods wreaked havoc across the pilgrimage route. The devastation, reminiscent of last year’s d*eadly Kailash Parikrama, left thousands of devotees stranded, disconnected, and vulnerable.

Network Collapse and Rising Panic
Mobile networks collapsed after August 25, leaving pilgrims unable to contact families or access digital payment services. The blackout triggered widespread confusion, with rumors spreading from Bharmour to outer regions, further escalating panic.

Flood Fury and Rescue Drama
Heavy rainfall caused the Manimahesh Dal Lake to overflow, unleashing a deluge from Manimahesh to Hadsar. Temporary bridges were swept away, forcing pilgrims to cross raging streams using ropes. Makeshift shops and langars were destroyed, and vendors lost their belongings, including sacred Rudraksha malas.

Swift Administrative Response
Despite the chaos, Bharmour administration launched immediate rescue operations. Free taxi services, meals, and helicopter evacuations were arranged. At the behest of the Himachal government, the Indian Air Force deployed Chinook helicopters to airlift devotees from Bharmour to Chamba. Yet, many pilgrims expressed anger over the lack of preparedness, chanting slogans against the state and local administration.

Digital Isolation and Public Outcry
The absence of mobile connectivity was a major grievance. Pilgrims struggled with Google Pay transactions and were unable to reach loved ones. The administration’s failure to restore communication added to public frustration.

Tragedy on the Kailash Circuit
The most severe casualties occurred along the treacherous Kailash Parikrama route. Many pilgrims succumbed to extreme cold, lack of oxygen, falling rocks, and vehicle accidents. The district administration was forced to suspend the Radhashtami rituals, causing significant losses to local vendors.

Symbolic Rituals Amid Disruption
Despite blocked paths, the Kartik Swami temple’s symbolic mace (chhadi) reached Dal Lake on foot, performing the coconut-throwing ritual to mark the Radhashtami dip. However, the traditional Shiv disciples from Sanchui could not reach the lake due to route closures.

Road Restoration Underway
The Chamba–Bharmour National Highway remains partially closed, with light motor vehicle access expected to resume in two days. Meanwhile, the Hadsar–Bharmour route is fully operational.
