MANDI: Dr Tara Devi Sen, head of the Department of Botany at Government Vallabh College at Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, was conferred with the prestigious Jijabai Achievers Award during a grand ceremony held at Shivaji College, Delhi, commemorating Shivaji Jayanti.


The award recognises exceptional women who have made transformative contributions to society across various fields.


The event was presided over by Vijaya K Rahatkar, Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, with Prof BW Pandey, Chairperson of the Governing Body at Shivaji College, serving as the guest of honour.


Esteemed academics, community leaders, and students gathered to celebrate the achievements of women dedicated to social change, education and sustainability.

A distinguished academician from Himachal Pradesh, Dr Sen was lauded for her groundbreaking research on the sustainable use of wild nutritional and medicinal plants — a crucial initiative for promoting ecological balance and ensuring food security.


Her work has been instrumental in advancing environmental conservation practices, earning her multiple accolades, including the Indian Biodiversity Award and the Young Scientist Award in 2021.


The Jijabai Achievers Award, instituted in 2010, honours individuals who have made outstanding contributions to gender awareness, community upliftment and social transformation.


Dr Sen’s unwavering dedication to sustainability, scientific research and women empowerment was highlighted as a beacon of inspiration for future generations.

Ceremony Highlights and Acknowledgements

As part of the celebration, Shivaji College’s Women’s Development Cell unveiled its annual publication, featuring in-depth articles on the journeys and achievements of the awardees, along with contributions from students and faculty.


Dr Sen, along with other awardees, received a commemorative shield and a cash prize of Rs 21,000. Applauding their efforts, Prof Virender Bhardwaj, Principal of Shivaji College, emphasised the importance of recognising women leaders who drive change at both community and national levels.
