Mandi (Munish Sood)
In a heartfelt tribute to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, the Himachal Pradesh Department of Language and Culture in Mandi is set to organise a unique district-level folk music competition.
The event aims to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh while inspiring a new generation of musicians to carry forward the timeless traditions of folk music.
The competition, divided into two distinct categories, reflects the harmonious coexistence of tradition and modernity. The first category, Pure Folk Music, emphasises the authenticity of Mandi’s age-old melodies, including heroic ballads, love songs, seasonal tunes, morning songs, labour songs and ceremonial music. These melodies have been the heartbeat of the region’s social celebrations for centuries.
The second category, Fusion Folk Music, encourages innovation by blending traditional folk music with contemporary musical elements. This fusion signifies how traditions can evolve to stay relevant in a rapidly changing world, keeping the essence of cultural identity alive.
Platform to nurture young talent
The competition will provide a platform for local artistes to showcase their talent and gain recognition. Participants will compete in two age groups: below 16 years and above 16 years, with separate competitions for men and women in each category.
Winners in each category will not only receive a cash prize of Rs 11,000 but will also get the opportunity to represent Mandi at the state-level competition.
“This event is more than a competition — it’s a movement to preserve our cultural roots,” said District Language Officer Promila Guleria. “By bringing attention to traditional and fusion music, we hope to inspire young artists to connect with their heritage while embracing creativity.”
Guidelines and Participation
- The performance duration for each participant is limited to 3-5 minutes, and artistes can participate in only one category.
- Applications must be submitted to the District Language Office by January 20, 2025, either in person or via email at dlomandi50@gmail.com.
- Participants must be permanent residents of Himachal Pradesh, though travel and other expenses will not be covered by the department.
Fostering cultural legacy
The competition’s design highlights the importance of folk music as a reflection of the community’s stories, emotions, and values. While the Pure Folk Music category encourages reverence for traditional forms, the Fusion Folk Music category demonstrates how traditions can adapt and thrive in a modern context.
“The fusion category is an innovative approach,” shared a local folk artiste. “It allows us to celebrate our roots while also exploring new horizons, making our music accessible to a wider audience.”
