Janat Thakur, an 18-year-old alpine skiing prodigy from Himachal Pradesh (India), is currently representing the nation at the 33rd Asian Alpine Skiing Championship, underway at Yanqing in China capital city Beijing.
The championship, which began on February 19 and will continue until March 2, 2025, has brought together Asia’s finest alpine skiers, and Janat stands tall among them, carrying the hopes of her community and country.
Hailing from Goshal village near Manali in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district, Janat’s journey from the quiet mountain slopes of her hometown to the prestigious Asian stage is a story of perseverance, passion and hard work.
Represented India in South Korea in 2023

Daughter of Rakesh Thakur and Usha Thakur and granddaughter of Khimi Ram, Janat grew up surrounded by snow-capped peaks where her love for skiing first took root.
Janat has been making steady strides in the world of alpine skiing. Having previously represented India in South Korea in 2023 and competed in FIS races in Dubai, she has consistently showcased her talent on international platforms.
For the past two years, she has been training intensively in Italy, honing her skills and preparing herself for high-level competitions like the one she now competes in.
At the ongoing championship in Beijing, Janat is not only competing against some of Asia’s best but is also receiving specialised training, aimed at refining her techniques and enhancing her performance.
Her presence at this prestigious event is a testament to her dedication and the countless hours she has spent perfecting her craft.
Goshal: The Mountain village that shaped a champion

Janat’s roots trace back to Goshal, a picturesque village just 4 km from Old Manali. Known for its apple orchards, pine forests and stunning views of the Himalayan peaks, Goshal remains one of Himachal Pradesh’s hidden gems.
Despite its proximity to the tourist haven of Manali, the village preserves its traditional charm — wooden houses, narrow paths, and a peaceful ambiance that naturally nurtures a connection with nature.
It was in this serene environment that Janat’s passion for skiing flourished. With snow-blanketed landscapes right at her doorstep, Goshal offered her the perfect natural playground to nurture her talent. Her journey from the quiet slopes of her village to the icy tracks of Beijing is a source of immense pride for the local community.
As the championship progresses, the entire village of Goshal, along with the nation, watches with hope and pride, cheering for Janat as she takes on some of the continent’s most formidable competitors.
