Claim Himachal govt’s MSP policy for alcohol of little good in district

The Newz Radar

MANDI: The residents of Mandi district are expressing dissatisfaction over soaring liquor prices in the region. Previously, liquor sales were marked by hefty price tags, exploiting consumers under the guise of alcohol taxation. Despite calls for intervention, both government and regulatory bodies didn’t intervene.

At present, liquor traders have been selling alcohol at nearly double the standard rates, sparking concerns among residents. Mandi and its neighbouring areas have become hotspots for such exploitative practices, with consumers bearing the brunt of exorbitant pricing.

Selling at almost double price
Despite the recent implementation of maximum selling price (MSP) by the government, the market continues to sell old stock at inflated rates. For example, a bottle of beer, priced at Rs 144 under MSP, is being sold for between Rs 250 and Rs 300. Similarly, a half bottle of McDowell whiskey, priced at Rs 264 under MSP, is being sold for Rs 450 to Rs 500.

Residents Megh Singh, Tek Chand and Daulat Ram have voiced their dissatisfaction, demanding swift action against the traders.
Of particular concern is the monopoly by a single liquor contractor in Mandi district, who is allegedly dictating prices. He managed to get all liquor vends in district for Rs 182 crore. With a single trader left in the entire district, he is allegedly dictating terms.

What excise dept says
Manoj Dogra, Deputy Commissioner of the Excise and Taxation Department, has called for strict enforcement of pricing regulations. “Any instances of overcharging will be met with prompt action. The errant contractors will be penalised,” he said. As the issue gains attention, the residents have been calling for transparency and accountability within the liquor industry, urging the authorities to protect consumers from exploitation and enforcement of pricing standards.
