Punjab Singh Tapwal’s plant generates lakhs while promoting renewable energy
MANDI: In a remarkable success story, Punjab Singh Tapwal, an advocate from Jandharu Khurd village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, has transformed eight bighas of barren land into a thriving solar energy hub.
Under the Himachal Pradesh government’s solar energy policy, Tapwal installed a 500-KW solar power plant, generating an impressive monthly income of Rs 2–3 lakh while contributing to the state’s green energy goals.
Tapwal’s journey began with a vision to do something meaningful for his village. After years of unused land plagued by wild animals and unfit for farming, he took advantage of the government’s streamlined single-window system to apply for the solar project. By April 2024, he secured the necessary approvals and funding, including a loan from the Central Bank of India, Sundernagar, with support from the Him Urja Department. By July 25, 2024, the plant was fully operational, marking a significant milestone in his life and the village’s development
“The solar plant is not just an income source but a step toward sustainable energy and environmental conservation,” said Tapwal. With an investment of Rs 1.70 crore, the plant now sells electricity at Rs 3.75 per unit. In just the initial months, he earned Rs 39,000 in five days of operation in July, followed by Rs 1.73 lakh in August and Rs 1.92 lakh in September. He anticipates annual earnings of Rs 24–28 lakh, with a break-even period of 8 to 10 years and substantial profits for the next 15 years.
Himachal’s green energy push under CM Sukhu
Advocate Tapwal’s story reflects the larger vision of the Himachal Pradesh government whose proactive solar energy policy has made it easier for individuals to establish renewable energy projects. With subsidies, simplified processes and focused support, many individuals are now exploring opportunities in solar energy.
Talking to The Newz Radar, Deputy Commissioner Apoorv Devgan highlighted that Mandi district alone is producing 6.86 MW of electricity through 16 solar plants. These projects are turning barren lands into productive assets, creating self-employment opportunities and supporting the state’s energy needs.
Expanding solar energy across Mandi district
According to Superintending Engineer Arun Sharma, several villages in Mandi, including Sadhwani, Bari-Gumanu, Rao and Bhadrwar, have become hubs for solar energy projects. The state government purchases electricity from these plants at Rs 3.75 per unit, ensuring steady returns for project owners.
Sharma added, “The administration is committed to supporting applicants in every way possible, from funding assistance to technical guidance. The success of such projects inspires others to adopt renewable energy initiatives.”
Model for sustainable growth
The solar plant initiative is not just a means of income for advocates like Tapwal but also a vital step toward environmental conservation. Solar energy, as a renewable source, reduces dependency on non-renewable resources and aligns with Himachal’s commitment to sustainable development.
Tapwal expressed his gratitude to the Himachal Pradesh government for promoting green energy and simplifying the process for solar projects. He believes that with continued support, more individuals will join the movement, turning Himachal into a true green energy state.
From barren lands to flourishing solar hubs, stories like Tapwal’s are proof that renewable energy holds the key to self-reliance and environmental harmony in Himachal Pradesh.
