The Lahaul-Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh, a favourite destination for tourists seeking to experience snow-covered landscapes, has recently come under scrutiny due to the dangerous behaviour of some visitors.
Police authorities have issued a stringent advisory warning tourists against venturing near the Chandra Bhaga river and surrounding streams.
Visitors found violating these directives may face imprisonment of up to eight days or a fine ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000 under Section 115 of the Himachal Pradesh Police Act.

Risky behaviour sparks crackdown

This crackdown follows a series of incidents where tourists were seen engaging in risky activities, such as stepping into the freezing river for selfies and smoking hookah along its banks.
A video of such behaviour near the Chandra Bhaga river recently surfaced, prompting Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police (SP) Mayank Chaudhary to take immediate action. Police patrols have been intensified, with officers using loudspeakers to caution visitors.

Avalanche warnings and rising risks

The authorities have also flagged the dangers of avalanches and sudden water surge due to melting ice. Avalanches in the region have disrupted river flow, creating unpredictable conditions that could turn fatal for anyone near the banks.
The police have also highlighted past incidents of drowning in the district’s rivers. The unpredictable nature of the frozen riverbanks, coupled with sub-zero water temperatures, makes the area extremely hazardous.
Tourists attempting to cross the river or venturing too close to its edges could face life-threatening consequences, especially if the ice suddenly breaks.
SP Chaudhary said these measures were essential to prevent accidents and protect both tourists and rescue teams operating in Lahaul-Spiti’s challenging terrain.
The authorities have now made it clear that those who disregard the advisory and approach the riverbanks or steep snowy slopes could face strict legal action.
