Dharamshala: In a significant legal development, the Ld. Special Judge-I Kangra, Sh. Rajeev Bali, has convicted two individuals, Sulkhan Singh and Inderjeet Singh, for drug trafficking under sections 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The accused, residents of Jammu and Kashmir, have been sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹1,00,000 each.
The incident took place on the night of 5th May 2023 when PSI Yadesh Kumar and his team were conducting routine checks in the Shiv Nagar area near Shiv Mandir, Dharamshala. During this time, a vehicle bearing registration No. JK02BA-6565, coming from Gharoh, attempted to avoid the police party. The driver, however, lost control and got the vehicle stuck in a drain. Upon suspicion, a search was conducted on the vehicle.
During the search, the police recovered 260 grams of heroin (also known as Chitta), wrapped in a polythene packet, from the exclusive possession of the accused. Consequently, a case was registered under sections 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act at PS Dharamshala.
The investigation was carried out, and the chargesheet was filed in the Ld. Court. During the trial, a total of 13 witnesses were examined. After hearing the arguments from both the prosecution, led by District Attorney Sh. N.S. Chauhan, and the defense counsel, the Ld. Special Judge-I Kangra convicted the accused and sentenced them to the mentioned term of imprisonment and imposed fines.
This conviction highlights the commitment of law enforcement in tackling the growing issue of drug trafficking and the stringent measures being taken under the NDPS Act to curb illegal drug trade activities in the region.
