Una: An attempted aerial incursion that originated from across the Pakistan border was thwarted by Indian air defence systems late Friday night.
Around 1.30 am, a rocket’s defused part crash-landed near Behd Bhated village in Una district, approximately 10 km from the revered Chintpurni temple, a major Shaktipeeth in Himachal Pradesh.
The loud blast jolted villagers awake, prompting many to rush out of their homes in panic. Several residents reported that their homes trembled due to the force of the explosion.
A minor fire broke out in the nearby forest but was quickly extinguished, possibly by the ongoing rain.
50-60 kg shell-like object found in fields
In the early hours of Saturday, locals discovered what appeared to be a 50-60 kg shell-like object in the fields. Upon receiving the alert, the police and local administration rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area.
Forensic and defence experts were later summoned to examine the debris. According to eyewitness, dogs had been barking incessantly after spotting unusual lights in the sky.
Moments later, a thunderous explosion rocked the vicinity. Debris fell into a forested patch near a house, sparking the brief fire. The house owner immediately alerted the village pradhan, who informed the police.
The house owner said the explosion was so powerful that his house vibrated from the shockwave. In the morning, he shared a detailed account with local MLA Sudarshan Babloo and officials who visited the site for an on-ground assessment.
Affected area lies close to the Punjab border
Behd Bhated village lies close to the Punjab border and has a population of over 300. Video footage shows locals examining the remains of the projectile, raising security concerns about tampering with unexploded ordnance.
Authorities had already issued a high alert in the region due to potential cross-border threats. A blackout was observed across Una district during the night, although some solar-powered lights remained on.
The MLA reportedly instructed the SDM to ensure complete darkness in sensitive areas going forward. While no casualties or injuries have been reported, the incident has triggered heightened vigilance and investigations are ongoing.
