Mahinder Patyal
Bharmour
Horticulture Officer Bharmour, Dr. Manohar Lal, shared important instructions with orchardists of the region regarding essential winter orchard management practices.
Fertilizer Management
Dr. Lal advised that during the dormant winter season, the application of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) fertilizers is most effective. These nutrients strengthen root development, improve flower quality, and enhance the tree’s overall resistance against frost and diseases. For a fully mature tree (over 10 years old), he recommended 350 grams of phosphorus (P₂O₅) and 700 grams of potassium (K₂O). The fertilizers should be evenly spread in the tree basin and lightly mixed into the soil without damaging the roots.
Pruning and Trunk Protection
He suggested light pruning, cautioning that excessive pruning leads to branch growth at the expense of fruit yield. Immediately after pruning, cut ends should be treated with Chaubatia paste (copper carbonate + red lead + linseed oil) or Bordeaux paint (copper sulfate + lime + linseed oil) to prevent canker and fungal infections.
For trunk protection, Bordeaux mixture or whitewash (lime + copper sulfate + linseed oil + DDL) should be applied to safeguard against sunburn caused by harsh winter sunlight and frost. This treatment also reduces the risk of bark splitting and pest infestation.
Dr. Lal emphasized maintaining orchard cleanliness and removing diseased branches after pruning to prevent the spread of infections. These measures, he noted, are vital for protecting plants from canker and other diseases.
