MANDI:
Hailing from Malwana village in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, 16-year-old Varun Walia has etched his name in sporting history by winning the bronze medal at the World Youth Savate Championship 2025, being held in Uzbekistan.

With this outstanding achievement, Varun has become the first Indian ever to secure a podium finish at this global martial arts event, marking a watershed moment for the sport of Savate in the country.

Competing in the youth boys’ 42kg weight category, Varun delivered a stellar performance, winning two tough bouts and standing out as India’s best performer in the tournament. Facing some of the most technically advanced opponents from across the world, he showed remarkable grit, speed and composure, ultimately clinching the bronze medal in what was one of the most competitive divisions of the championship.

From Mandi’s Malwana to global arena

Born to Amar Chand, an HRTC employee, and Neha Walia, a homemaker, Varun is a student of Class 11th at St FX Convent school, Bagla. His journey began on the dusty grounds of his village where discipline and ambition replaced distractions. Training under humble conditions in a state with limited exposure to Savate, Varun’s ascent is a story of perseverance and dreams pursued with quiet determination.

As the news of his win broke, celebrations erupted in Mandi. For the residents of Malwana and the people of Himachal Pradesh, Varun’s medal is more than a sporting milestone. It is a source of immense pride and inspiration for youth in rural India.

The 2025 championship also marked Team India’s debut appearance in the World Youth Savate Championship. A total of five Indian athletes participated — three from Bihar and two from Himachal Pradesh, including Varun. The Indian contingent was coached by Rahul Srivastava and their participation signals India’s growing interest and investment in the French combat sport.

Speaking on the occasion, Technical Director of the Savate Association of India Navjot Bharjot expressed immense pride: “Watching our young athletes perform on the world stage and bring home a medal is a moment of great national pride. Varun’s courage and commitment have set a benchmark for future Indian athletes.”

Despite the global spotlight and high-pressure environment, Varun remained focused. Competing in a highly demanding weight division, he handled each match with the poise of a seasoned athlete, embodying the mental strength of a true champion.

Supporters and experts hailed Varun as a “future star of Indian martial arts”, citing his balanced technique, relentless spirit, and ability to thrive under pressure.
