Shimla:
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for July 29 in parts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of intense rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi districts. The state continues to face the impact of a highly active monsoon, with several regions reporting landslides, cloudbursts and infrastructure damage over the past few days.
Yellow alert for several regions on July 27, 28
The weather department has also issued a yellow alert for July 27 and 28 in districts, including Una, Kangra, Sirmaur, Hamirpur, Mandi and Shimla. On July 29, a yellow alert remains in place for Una, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, Shimla and Sirmaur.
The IMD advises residents and tourists to avoid travel to vulnerable hill areas due to the risk of landslides and flashfloods.
As of now, 203 roads, including two national highways, remain blocked due to landslides and heavy rain. The Mandi district is the worst affected, with 130 roads closed, especially in the Seraj region where 81 roads are still inaccessible. Water supply has also taken a hit with 113 drinking water schemes disrupted, while nearly 75 power transformers remain non-functional, affecting electricity in rural and semi-urban areas.
Monsoon activity higher than normal in many districts
The monsoon has been particularly intense this year. Mandi has received 820.4 mm of rainfall, which is 63% above normal. Similarly, Sirmaur recorded 711.7 mm rainfall, 30% above average. Rainfall in other key districts includes Shimla (493.1 mm), Una (454.2 mm), Solan (462.1 mm), Hamirpur (506.8 mm) and Bilaspur (409.4 mm).
In contrast, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur and Chamba districts have reported below-average rainfall, with Lahaul-Spiti recording the lowest at 49.4 mm.
The authorities urge residents to stay updated with local advisories and avoid unnecessary travel, especially in high-risk zones, as monsoon activity continues in full swing across Himachal Pradesh.
