SHIMLA: Weather conditions remained unsettled across Himachal Pradesh on Sunday (December 14, 2025) as fresh alerts for rain and snowfall loomed over the state. Higher reaches, particularly in Lahaul-Spiti, witnessed light snowfall, while cold wave conditions intensified in several regions.
Light snow was reported from high-altitude areas, including Baralacha, Kunzum Pass, Shinkula and the 13,050-foot-high Rohtang Pass. The snowfall on the peaks pushed the entire Lahaul valley into a deep freeze. Strong winds gusting up to 37 kmph were also recorded in Tabo, adding to the chill.
Elsewhere in the state, skies remained largely overcast. Dense fog reduced visibility in Bilaspur, while Mandi experienced patches of light fog. The Meteorological Department has issued a dense fog warning for Bilaspur and Mandi districts for Monday and Tuesday, advising commuters to remain cautious.
Night temperatures dipped sharply, making several lower and mid-hill towns colder than the state capital. Una, Dharamshala, Manali, Hamirpur, Bilaspur and Mandi reported colder nights compared to Shimla. Overall, the minimum temperature across the state dropped by around 2 degrees Celsius.
Dry weather likely to prevail till December 19
According to the Meteorological Centre in Shimla, dry weather is likely to prevail till December 19. However, light snowfall is expected in higher elevations on December 20. The department has cautioned drivers to maintain low speeds, use fog lights and avoid unnecessary travel during early morning and late-night hours.
While minimum temperatures in mid and high hill areas remained largely stable, lower hill and plain regions saw a rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius in night temperatures. Minimum temperatures across Himachal ranged between minus 4 and 12 degrees Celsius, with Kukumseri recording the lowest at minus 4.3 degrees Celsius.
Day temperatures also fell noticeably, with many places registering a drop of 2 to 7 degrees Celsius. In lower regions, maximum temperatures remained 2 to 6 degrees below normal. The weather office has warned that minimum temperatures may fall further by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius over the next two to three days, indicating a sharper cold spell ahead.
