SHIMLA:

Heavy snowfall and harsh weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh have caused severe losses to shepherds moving through high-altitude areas.
Around 250 sheep and goats perished near Jarasu Jot in the Chamba region after a sudden snowstorm and avalanche hit the area on Friday.

The shepherds, who were travelling with a herd of nearly 600 animals from Bada Bhangal towards Kangra via Holi, were caught off guard by the rapidly changing weather.

Shepherds suffer frostbite after prolonged exposure

Two shepherds, identified as Krishan Kumar and Joginder, both residents of Gwal Tikker in Kangra district, suffered severe frostbite (ice burns) after being trapped in snow for several hours. Their condition worsened due to extended exposure to freezing temperatures before help could reach them.

After villagers were alerted, Asha Kumar, the head of Nyagran panchayat, quickly organised a local rescue team. However, their journey was not easy. On the way to Jarasu Jot, the Ravi river near Dharadi was swollen due to melting snow, making access difficult.

Villagers constructed a makeshift wooden bridge to cross the river and managed to rescue the two injured shepherds along with the remaining sheep and goats. The injured men were first taken to the Holi hospital for initial treatment and later referred to Tanda Medical College, where they are now receiving care for frostbite and other injuries.

Fresh snow blankets higher reaches of Himachal

While tragedy struck in Chamba, snowfall across Lahaul-Spiti, Rohtang Pass, Baralacha, Shinkula, Kunzum Pass and the Atal Tunnel area brought a fresh white cover to the region.
This was the second major snowfall of the season in the Chandra Valley, making the entire region appear snow-clad and scenic.

The snowfall has brought mixed reactions. While it severely impacted livestock movement, local tourism stakeholders are optimistic about the upcoming winter season, expecting a boost in tourist footfall. In contrast, the state capital Shimla and surrounding areas enjoyed clear sunshine.

Weather forecast for the coming days

According to the Shimla Meteorological Centre, there is a chance of light rain and snow at a few locations on October 22. However, the weather is expected to remain mostly clear from October 23 to 27 across the state.

A fresh western disturbance is likely to become active around October 27, which may bring more rainfall and snowfall to the region.

In the next 2-3 days, maximum temperatures are expected to remain largely steady, while minimum temperatures may drop by 1-2°C, especially in higher elevations.
