MANDI: In a proud moment for Himachal Pradesh, Sumit Thakur from Shuru village of Manali in Kullu district has been selected for the prestigious National Youth Award 2021-22 by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports.
The award recognises young individuals for their exceptional contributions to social service and nation-building. Sumit will be honoured at a grand ceremony at the National Youth Parliament 2025 in new Parliament building in Delhi in March- end.
With only 15 young achievers selected nationwide, his accomplishment is truly remarkable.
Sumit’s journey into social service began at the age of 15, which was driven by a deep sense of responsibility. Over the years, his unwavering dedication has earned him recognition as a youth icon in Himachal Pradesh, inspiring thousands through his impactful initiatives.

Championing blood & organ donation
One of Sumit’s most significant contributions has been in the field of blood donation awareness. Understanding the urgency of blood availability in emergencies, he has taken proactive steps to encourage young donors.
A 21-time blood donor himself, he has set a strong example. He has organised hundreds of blood donation camps, saving countless lives.
Besides, he has led awareness campaigns that dispelled myths and encouraged youth participation.
Beyond blood donation, Sumit has pledged to donate all his organs after death, a testament to his selfless commitment to saving lives. His awareness efforts have motivated many others to register as organ donors, addressing India’s critical organ donation shortage.

Relief efforts & environmental conservation
Sumit’s impact extends beyond health initiatives. A strong advocate for environmental conservation, he has led multiple tree plantation drives and awareness rallies.
His dedication was especially evident during the Covid-19 pandemic when he launched “Mission Digital CoroAware”, a 200-day-long awareness campaign.
During the crisis, he distributed essential supplies like medicines, masks and ration to the needy. He spread awareness about COVID-19 safety protocols.
He also ensured doorstep deliveries of critical resources during lockdowns. His tireless efforts earned him widespread appreciation and recognition.
National recognition & celebrations in Himachal
Sumit’s contributions have been recognised at the highest levels. In 2020, he was honoured with the President’s Award by Ram Nath Kovind for his dedication to youth empowerment and public service.
Additionally, both state and central governments have lauded his efforts.
To further his mission, Sumit founded “Yuva”, an NGO dedicated to mobilising young minds for social causes, including blood donation, environmental conservation, organ donation and relief efforts for underprivileged communities.
His selection for the National Youth Award has sparked celebrations across Himachal Pradesh, with leaders like former CM Jai Ram Thakur, MP Kangana Ranaut, Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj and Govind Thakur extending their congratulations.
