Shimla: The official website of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU), one of the state’s top public universities, was hacked by alleged Pakistan-based hackers, who defaced the homepage with abusive language and pro-Pakistan slogans.
A disturbing message claiming retaliation against India’s border actions during the recent Operation Sindoor was also posted by the attackers.
The website has since been recovered and is now under maintenance while a formal complaint has been lodged with the Himachal Pradesh Police’s Cyber Crime Cell, which has launched an investigation.
Hackers leave threatening message mocking India
The hacked homepage displayed an inflammatory message, claiming the involvement of “Pakistani hackers” and warning of retaliation if India “dared to attack Pakistan’s borders or cyber space”.
The message ridiculed Indian defence capabilities and included provocative references to nuclear power and past military conflicts. Slogans like “Pakistan Zindabad” and derogatory remarks directed at Indian citizens were also visible.
The hackers mocked Indian technology capabilities, claiming, “Hackers are made in India, but born in Pakistan”, and issued veiled threats about cyber and military retaliation.
University’s data security under scrutiny
The attack has raised serious concerns about data privacy and digital infrastructure at the university. Since the HPU’s website hosts key updates related to admissions, counselling and academic activities, students were unable to access crucial information at a critical time.
“There is also a possibility of student data being compromised,” university officials admitted. Counselling for new admissions is currently underway and the disruption has caused inconvenience to both students and faculty. Officials noted that the website’s network management was recently changed.
Cyber Crime Cell investigating matter, says top official
A top officer of the Cyber Crime Cell confirmed the breach and assured that a dedicated team was investigating the incident. “We are taking the matter seriously. The source of the attack is being traced and necessary security upgrades will be implemented,” he said.
The university’s IT team, along with external experts, has temporarily secured the site and is assessing the extent of the breach. The authorities have not ruled out the possibility of a targeted cyber espionage effort, especially given the nature of the threats posted.
