The Himachal Pradesh Police busted a drug smuggling attempt and arrested a serving SDRF constable along with his accomplice for possession of chitta (heroin).
The incident unfolded near Sanogi, under Kunihar police station limits, when the duo was intercepted based on a tip-off — only for police to discover that one of the smugglers was wearing the very uniform meant to protect society.
The clock had barely struck midnight when a patrol team from Kunihar police station received a tip-off about two men on a motorcycle heading toward Kunihar from Subathu allegedly carrying a consignment of chitta. Without wasting a second, the team sprang into action, setting up a surprise naka (checkpoint) near the secluded stretch of Sanogi.
4.60 grams of heroin recovered
Within minutes, a black motorcycle came into view, its headlight cutting through the foggy mountain air. As it approached the barricade, officers signalled the riders to stop. Sensing trouble, the pillion rider allegedly tried to turn, but the team swiftly surrounded the vehicle.
A quick frisking led to the recovery of 4.60 grams of heroin, carefully wrapped and hidden in their clothing. But the real shock came when one of the accused produced his ID: Ankush Kumar (28), a serving constable with the SDRF in Shimla.
His companion, identified as Nitish (28), a resident of Tiyukri village in Arki tehsil, was also taken into custody.
Solan SP Gaurav Singh confirmed the arrests and stated that an FIR had been registered at Kunihar Police Station under relevant sections of the NDPS Act. “This is a serious breach of duty and integrity. We are investigating his background, previous service record and any potential links to a larger network. The motorcycle has been seized, and further interrogation is underway,” he added.
