Shimla: Cracking down on traffic violators, the Himachal Pradesh Police have arrested over 1,300 persons for serious offences, suspended 3,400 driving licences and issued challans to more than 13,000 motorists across the state from September 2024 to February 2025.
The highest violations have been reported in Shimla, Solan and Mandi districts, indicating the need for greater compliance in these urban areas.
12 digital display boards installed across state
Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Atul Verma said that 12 digital display boards had been installed across the state to promote road safety awareness.
These boards aimed to educate drivers and pedestrians alike on traffic rules and responsible driving behaviour, said the DGP..
In addition to enforcement, the police have emphasised awareness as a key tool in reducing accidents. “We are not just punishing violators but also making continuous efforts to educate the public,” said DGP Verma.
Rise in pedestrian accidents during evening hours
The campaign has also revealed a worrying trend — a noticeable increase in pedestrian accidents, particularly between 6 pm and 9 pm on national highways.
The authorities have identified poor visibility, rash driving and lack of pedestrian infrastructure as contributing factors.
DGP Verma urged the public to avoid driving under the influence of liquor or other intoxicants and report any suspicious drivers by calling emergency number 112. “The public cooperation is essential in ensuring safer roads for everyone,” he added.
