On the backfoot over the closure and merger of nearly 500 schools, the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government has found an opportunity in the MLA Hansraj controversy to counter the opposition BJP during the forthcoming monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly.

Scheduled from August 27 to September 9, the monsoon session is expected to be stormy, with the BJP planning to corner the Congress government over the closure of institutions and doing away with power and water bill subsidies, among other issues.

A BJP MLA from Churah in Chamba and a former Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, Hansraj has found himself embroiled in a serious controversy as a 20-year-old girl has accused him of engaging in an obscene chat on the phone.

The girl, who is reportedly the daughter of a local BJP booth president, lodged a formal complaint with the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Chamba, leading to the registration of an FIR at the district’s women police station. She, however, subsequently posted a video denying the allegations.

The complainant accused the MLA of repeatedly making inappropriate advances, including demanding nude pictures over chat and using derogatory language. She alleged that whenever she approached Hansraj for any work-related issues, he would respond with inappropriate requests, pressuring her to meet him in person under dubious pretexts.

She even expressed grave concerns for her safety and that of her family, alleging that the MLA and his associates had threatened her. She alleged that they had even gone as far as to break one of her phones in an attempt to destroy evidence of the incriminating chats.

In response to the complaint, the Chamba police had registered an FIR against Hansraj under Sections 75 and 351(2) of the BNS. The case was officially filed on August 9 and an investigation is currently underway.

The Himachal government three days ago denotified 99 government primary and middle schools with zero enrolment. It also ordered merger of 419 schools, including 361 of the primary wing, with five or less students with the nearest schools.

With the BJP planning to gherao the Congress government over these closures and other contentious issues, the upcoming Assembly session is expected to be highly charged.
