Shimla: Incidents of harassment against schoolgirls in Himachal Pradesh have surged, raising serious concerns among parents, activists and authorities. Recent cases reported from Sirmaur, Shimlaand other districts reveal a disturbing trend where teachers themselves are allegedly involved in such misconduct.

In a shocking incident, a Sanskrit teacher at a government school in Shimla has been accused of harassing a sixth-grade student. The victim’s parents filed a complaint, leading to the registration of an FIR under the POCSO Act and relevant sections for molestation at Boileauganj police station. The accused teacher is currently under interrogation.

The matter came to light after a women’s group intervened, staging protests outside the school and demanding strict action. Sonia Shabarwal, secretary of the women’s committee, condemned the incident, stating, “Such cases in schools are deeply alarming. The ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ slogan seems hollow when our daughters face harassment in educational institutions.”

According to Shabarwal, the teacher had been inappropriately touching the girl for several days, forcing her to skip school out of fear. The victim only confided in her sister after persistent questioning.

Police assures of fair investigation

Shimla SP Sanjeev Gandhi confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway. “We have registered the case and will ensure an impartial inquiry,” he said. Meanwhile, the women’s group has urged the administration to dismiss accused teachers and enforce stricter safeguards in schools.

This incident follows another case in Sirmaur last month, where a TGT (Non-Medical) teacher was suspended for allegedly harassing 24 students.
The Education Directorate acted after complaints emerged during a school programme, prompting an internal inquiry. A committee, including parents, was formed, and the victims detailed their ordeal.

Growing demand for accountability

Activists are demanding stricter background checks for teachers and mandatory gender sensitivity training. The recurring cases highlight systemic failures in protecting students, prompting calls for urgent reforms in school safety protocols.

As investigations continue, the state faces mounting pressure to ensure justice and restore parents’ trust in the education system.
