MANDI: Sanjeev Kumar, a Himachal Pradesh Police official and the personal security officer (PSO) of former Bilaspur MLA Bumber Thakur, will be honoured with the prestigious DGP Disc Award for saving the life of the Congress leader.
Sanjeev Kumar sustained three bullet injuries after risking his life to protect Bumber Thakur, who was shot at in his official residence in Bilaspur on Holi.
In recognition of his extraordinary bravery, the Bilaspur police have recommended Sanjeev Kumar for the DGP Disc Award, the highest honour for exceptional bravery and service in the police force.
The Bilaspur SP has confirmed that the district police department had recommended his name for the distinguished honour.
Heroic deed in line of duty
The attack took place on March 14, 2025, when unidentified assailants opened fire at Bumber Thakur. Acting with courage, PSO Sanjeev Kumar stepped in as a human shield, ensuring that Bumber Thakur remained unharmed.
Sanjeev Kumar sustained three gunshot wounds in the attack. Despite being gravely injured, he retaliated with gunfire, forcing the attackers to flee and preventing what could have been a political assassination. His quick response and fearless commitment saved Bumber Thakur’s life.
Admitted to AIIMS-Bilaspur in critical condition
A resident of Sector-1 in Bilaspur and a 2011 batch police officer, Sanjeev Kumar was immediately rushed to AIIMS-Bilaspur where he was admitted to the ICU in a critical condition.
One bullet shattered his knee, requiring a major surgery and prolonged rehabilitation. Another bullet pierced his intestines, necessitating an emergency surgical procedure. A third bullet struck his arm.
Doctors have said that Sanjeev Kumar is now out of danger, but his recovery would take several months.
Bilaspur Deputy Commissioner Abid Hussain Sadiq also visited AIIMS-Bilaspur to check on Sanjeev Kumar’s health and praised his heroic act, emphasising that his courage would serve as an inspiration for the entire police force.
