Himachal CM, Governor at odds over drug remarks; Sukhu says such comments don’t behove constitutional office

Shimla:

A political face-off has emerged in Himachal Pradesh between the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla with Sukhu taking strong exception to remarks made by the Governor on the state’s drug situation.

Calling the comments inappropriate for someone holding a constitutional post, Sukhu said such statements reflect poorly on the dignity of the office and should be avoided.

In an informal interaction with the media on Monday (July 28, 2025), the Chief Minister emphasised that while the state is actively combating the drug menace, sweeping public statements by the Governor only add to confusion and undermine state efforts. “We will seek a meeting with him to understand the context of his remarks,” Sukhu said.

CM says drug fight being taken seriously

Rebutting criticism, Sukhu outlined the measures his government has taken to curb drug trafficking and drug consumption across the state. “We have implemented the PIT-NDPS Act and a comprehensive mapping of 3,575 panchayats is underway to identify and crack down on the local drug networks,” he said.

The CM reiterated that the government’s fight against narcotics is rooted in grassroots action and institutional reforms, not just rhetoric. He called for collective responsibility rather than politically charged comments.

Insult to national flag won’t be tolerated

CM Sukhu also spoke out strongly on a separate incident involving Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi during a visit to Thunag in the Seraj constituency, where he alleged that the minister was treated with disrespect. He linked the incident to a larger issue of undermining the dignity of state institutions and national symbols.

“Any disrespect toward the tricolour or elected representatives will not be tolerated. We have already initiated legal proceedings and an FIR has been filed,” the CM confirmed, describing the episode as “unfortunate.”

Asks Centre to show real support, not optics

Targeting the BJP-led central government, Sukhu questioned the timing and intent behind recent meetings held by Union Minister JP Nadda with central officials regarding Himachal. “Where was this concern when Himachal was reeling under floods and landslides in 2023 and 2024? The need then was for action, not now for posturing,” he said.

Sukhu clarified that his government is open to engaging with the Centre under Nadda’s leadership — provided there is a genuine commitment to support disaster-hit communities, especially by relaxing norms around forest land allocation for resettlement.

He also underscored the significance of the ongoing four-day cabinet meeting, calling it a symbol of administrative transformation. “This is not a ceremonial gathering. We are laying the groundwork for a self-reliant Himachal, and every hour of discussion is focused on decisive action,” Sukhu said.
