Shimla: The race for the post of Himachal Pradesh BJP president is nearing its climax with former state Assembly Speaker and incumbent party chief Dr Rajeev Bindal emerging as the leading contender for a second consecutive term.
The nomination for the coveted post will be filed on Monday at the party headquarters, Deep Kamal, in Shimla. While the possibility of multiple nominations remains, party insiders indicate a growing consensus around Bindal’s reappointment.
Rajya Sabha MP Dr Sikander Kumar and Lok Sabha MP from Kangra, Dr Rajeev Bhardwaj, are also being discussed as potential candidates. However, the BJP leadership is reportedly inclined towards retaining continuity in the organisation through Bindal.
Nomination process on June 30, announcement on July 1
According to BJP sources, party election officers Rajeev Bhardwaj and Sanjeev Katwal will receive nominations for the state president post at Deep Kamal on Monday. In case only one nomination is filed — as is widely expected — Bindal’s re-election will be uncontested.
The formal announcement of the new president will be made on July 1 in Shimla by Union Minister and BJP’s Himachal election in-charge Dr Jitendra Singh.
A felicitation ceremony for the new president is scheduled later that day at Hotel Peterhoff, where senior BJP leaders and workers from across the state will gather.
Over 200 delegates to vote if multiple nominations are filed
In the unlikely scenario of more than one nomination, over 200 elected delegates — members of the BJP state executive committee — would vote to decide the next president. However, sources said such a situation is improbable as the central leadership has almost finalised Bindal’s name through internal consensus.
Party insiders say the leadership values Bindal’s organisational experience and his role in maintaining cohesion during politically turbulent times.
Election management meeting scheduled ahead of nomination day
Ahead of Monday’s nomination, the BJP has scheduled a crucial election management meeting on Sunday at Deep Kamal. Chaired by election officers Rajeev Bhardwaj and Sanjeev Katwal, the meeting will finalise responsibilities for the June 30 nomination process and the July 1 announcement and ceremony.
Before the meeting, BJP leaders, including state co-incharge Sanjay Tandon, will attend a live telecast of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’ at Tutu.
