MANDI: Political sycophancy is nothing new in India, but a Congress leader in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh seems to have taken it to a whole new level.
The leader, APMC member and Congress-nominated municipal councillor Darshan Singh, has put up a poster in Mandi welcoming Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu but referring to him as the “Prime Minister of Himachal Pradesh”.
The poster, which has gone viral on social media, was put up at Sairy Manch and near the DC office. The text on it read: “Shri Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Honourable Prime Minister (H.P.), Heartfelt Greetings and Welcome to Mandi.”
Social media turns Congress’ enthusiasm into joke
As expected, the poster went viral, with social media users having a field day mocking the Congress. One user sarcastically wrote, “Congratulations to Sukhu Ji on his well-deserved promotion to Prime Minister!”
Another quipped, “Prime Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is arriving in Mandi, and on this occasion, Chief Minister Modi will also be present.”
The opposition jumped on the opportunity, questioning how Congress supporters could make such a blunder and whether this reflected their political awareness.
Embarrassed by the controversy, party workers quickly removed the poster, but not before screenshots flooded the internet.
Himachal Congress’ history of blunders
This isn’t the first time Congress workers in Himachal Pradesh have embarrassed their own leaders. There have been multiple incidents where blind loyalty led to public ridicule.:

During the tenure of former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh, some Congress supporters hailed him as the “Raja of India”, forgetting that democracy doesn’t work that way. The blunder led to a social media storm, with critics questioning why Congress workers still clung to feudal-era mindsets.
Before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, several Congress leaders in Himachal put up posters declaring Rahul Gandhi as the “future Prime Minister of India”. The move backfired terribly, especially after Congress suffered a humiliating defeat, making the posters a source of endless memes.
A Congress minister from Himachal once referred to Sonia Gandhi as the “Mother of the Nation”, sparking outrage.
Many questioned whether Congress had forgotten the actual national icons like Bharat Mata, Rani Lakshmi Bai or even Indira Gandhi, instead choosing to flatter the Nehru-Gandhi family unnecessarily.
Before the 2022 Himachal Pradesh Assembly elections, Congress workers celebrated as if Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had already won. They put up banners calling him “Himachal’s Greatest Leader” even before the results were out.
