Ex-Minister receiving threats, complaint lodged

Una: – In a disturbing development that has cast a fresh spotlight on the law and order situation in Himachal Pradesh, senior BJP leader and former Cabinet Minister Virendra Kanwar has lodged a formal police complaint after receiving repeated threats over the phone. According to Kanwar, the latest call—received late Saturday night—included not only explicit warnings but also personal details of his family, raising serious concerns about his and his family’s security.

While the former minister initially brushed off the anonymous calls, the increasingly specific and menacing nature of the threats compelled him to approach the police. The complaint includes the phone number from which the threats originated. The police have initiated an investigation to trace the caller and determine the motive behind the intimidation.

This incident, however, is not an isolated case. Over the past year, Himachal Pradesh has witnessed a worrying trend of threats and intimidation targeted at prominent individuals, suggesting a deeper breakdown in the state’s internal security.

This incident paint a grim picture of deteriorating law and order in the state . In a recent assembly session, opposition leaders highlighted the rising crime graph, citing threats to public figures, increasing street violence, and inadequate policing. Former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur even alleged a “complete collapse” of law enforcement, referencing incidents involving VIPs being openly threatened without swift or visible consequences.

Sources within the police confirm that the number of registered threat cases involving political and public personalities has risen significantly over the last 12 months, although many incidents go unreported due to fears of political backlash or public panic.

As the investigation into the threats against Virendra Kanwar unfolds, the spotlight remains firmly on the state government’s capacity to safeguard not just the general public, but also those in positions of leadership and influence. The recurring nature of these threats underscores an urgent need for a strategic overhaul of policing, surveillance, and intelligence mechanisms in Himachal Pradesh.
