Shimla:

An event was organised at the Ridge in Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla on Wednesday (October 1, 2025) to mark the International Day of Older Persons wherein elderly citizens were honoured for their contributions to society.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who was present as the chief guest, said the state government would soon bring in a special scheme for those aged above 70 years, with health officials visiting their homes to provide care.

One of the highlights of the event was a spirited ramp walk by women aged 60 to 80 from the Khaliini and Vikasnagar areas of Shimla. Their graceful walk was met with enthusiastic applause from the gathered crowd, reflecting both admiration and respect.

Adding to the cultural flavour of the day, members of the Chaupal Self-Help Group performed a traditional folk dance from the Chaupal region.

During the programme, the Chief Minister honoured senior citizens for outstanding work in their respective communities.

‘Rogi Mitra’ scheme for 70+ citizens

Addressing the gathering, CM Sukhu announced the upcoming ‘Rogi Mitra’ scheme, specifically aimed at senior citizens aged 70 and above. Under this initiative, health workers will visit elderly residents at their homes, monitor their health conditions, and ensure timely treatment.

“Please support this initiative a little — it’s for your well-being,” the CM said, assuring that improved healthcare for the elderly is a top priority for his government. “Life expectancy among Himachal’s elderly is increasing, and the government will continue to bring schemes focused on their care,” he added.

Focus on healthcare, education, anti-corruption

Highlighting broader reforms, CM Sukhu emphasised his government’s commitment to curbing corruption and delivering equitable access to public welfare schemes.

He noted that Himachal Pradesh has emerged as the leading state in India in terms of literacy rate and attributed recent improvements in education to the integration of state schools with the CBSE curriculum. “Just like eating amla — sour at first, but sweet later — the results of these reforms will soon be visible,” he remarked.

On healthcare, Sukhu pointed out that robotic surgery had been introduced for the first time at Chamiyana Hospital. He also reiterated his government’s commitment to upgrading medical colleges and extending AIIMS-level facilities at IGMC-Shimla.

The CM also linked the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme to respecting and supporting the elderly, calling it a step toward dignifying their contributions.

Concluding his address, CM Sukhu appealed to the people of Himachal Pradesh for their continued support and blessings, stating, “Your trust and cooperation will help us build a more prosperous and inclusive Himachal.”
